Swiss maritime technology manufacturer WinGD has closed a deal to supply ammonia-powered engines to ammonia-powered engines to four to four medium-capacity gas carriers to be built by HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea for commodity trader Trafigura.
Four vessels with clean technology
The new vessels, with a capacity of 45,000 cubic meters each, will be equipped with six-cylinder engines type 6X52DF-A. This line of WinGD propellants is designed to operate with ammonia as the main fuel, integrating The engines will be equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to minimize pollutant emissions, especially nitrogen oxides (NOx).
WinGD, based in Winterthur, has been promoting environmentally friendly energy solutions for decades. Its two-stroke engine two-stroke engine technology technology enables thermal efficiencies comparable to those of diesel, with pilot fuel consumptionof less than 5% and ammonia emissions below 10 ppm.
Trafigura opts for ammonia engines for its future fleet
With this acquisition, Trafigura joins the global trend of adopting ammonia as an energy carrier for the shipping industry. The order also strengthens WinGD’s position in the ammonia transportation market, consolidating the demand for green propulsion technologies.
Deliveries of these engines are expected between early 2027 and early 2028. WinGD has already validated the performance of the X-DF-A models on test benches, including full-load operation and control of nitrous oxide emissions. nitrous oxide emissions (N₂O) emissions below 3 ppm. This allows them to assure their customers of future technical reliability and regulatory compliance.
