Weatherford International has secured a strategic contract to perform managed pressure control (MPD) drilling services in the development of the Trion project, operated by Woodside Energy offshore Tamaulipas. The project is located in a deepwater environment at a depth of approximately 2,500 meters, making it one of the most important energy initiatives in the region.
The Trion project and automated technology for critical environments
As part of the agreement, Weatherford will deploy its Victus intelligent MPD system, designed to optimize drilling performance in demanding offshore conditions. This technology, already validated in floating operations, integrates algorithmic pressure control and automatic responses based on real-time downhole data. The system will initially be applied in eight wells, with the possibility of extending to twenty-four, consolidating Weatherford’s participation in the Mexican offshore market.
The Trion field field is a joint venture between Woodside Petróleo Operaciones de México (60% interest) and Petróleos Mexicanos (40%). The award to Weatherford marks an operational milestone in public-private collaboration and reflects the growing confidence in solutions that integrate digitization, efficiency and automation in highly complex explorations.
From its position as a global provider of energy technologies, Weatherford reaffirms its focus on sustainable and safe operations. The implementation of the Victus system not only improves operational control, but also reduces risk and allows for more consistent progress in each drilling phase. The contract represents an opportunity to strengthen Mexico’s offshore infrastructure and consolidate local expertise in large-scale projects.
