Finland’s Wärtsilä has confirmed the sale of its Gas Solutions unit to German private equity fund Mutares, in a deal that is in line with its plan to focus on businesses with high technological potential and low environmental impact.

The Gas Solutions division is known for developing gas treatment, liquefaction and conversion systems, as well as integrated solutions for shipping, power and biogas. In 2024 it generated revenues of €300 million and has operated independently within Wärtsilä’s business portfolio.

From Wärtsilä, Bernd Bertram, head of the exiting units, said the divestment consolidates the group’s restructuring strategy. “Gas Solutions will continue to grow under a robust platform, maintaining its focus on customers, digitalization and sustainability,” he said.

The buyer, Mutares, is known for acquiring industrial companies with growth potential. Its investment strategy is also based on boosting existing operations and promoting profitability through operational improvements.

The transaction is part of Wärtsilä’s objective to reduce the complexity of its portfolio and focus on marine and energy and energy technologies that support global decarbonization. With a presence in 77 countries and net sales of €6.4 billion in 2024, the company seeks to strengthen its leadership in sustainable technologies.

Gas Solutions has played a strategic role in the transition to cleaner energy sources. Its portfolio also ranges from inert gas and liquefaction systems to gas-to-electricity technologies, excelling in efficiency and reliability.

For Mutares, this acquisition represents an opportunity to capitalize on the knowledge accumulated in the gas life cycle, consolidating its position as a relevant player in industrial solutions for clean energy.
