International renewable energy company Voltalia has started service of its new biomass power plant in Sinnamary, a 10.5 megawatt facility located at the Petit-Saut site in French Guiana.

With an annual production capacity of more than 80 gigawatt-hours, the plant will supply up to 8% of the department’s electricity needs. The
This project is part of the energy and timber cluster developed in Petit-Saut. In addition to the power plant, a sawmill has been built that will produce nearly 9,000 m³ of wood per year. The entire complex is part of a long-term circular economy model with a positive environmental and social impact.
With this new infrastructure, the company brings its total installed capacity in French Guiana to more than 17 megawatts. In addition, its plants in Kourou(1.7 MW) and Cacao(5.1 MW) supplied part of the electricity system, and with Sinnamary, coverage equivalent to 16 % of local consumption is achieved.
Robert Klein, CEO of Voltalia, mentioned that this plant represents a turning point for energy production in the region. “It demonstrates that it is possible to generate low-carbon, reliable and competitive electricity using local resources,” he said.
The Sinnamary project, with an investment of over 200 million euros, is designed to operate for 25 years. The implementation of this development strengthens the territory’s electricity grid and reduces dependence on fossil fuels, in line with the national energy transition objectives.
