Vattenfall has made the final investment decision for the construction of the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms. With Nordlicht 1 reaching a capacity of approximately 980 MW, it will be Germany’s largest offshore wind farm . Construction will begin in 2026, and the farms are expected to be operational in 2028.
The Nordlicht cluster marks a crucial step forward in Germany’s energy transition, a step toward energy independence and a more sustainable industrial model. These farms will provide clean and reliable energy, driving industrial decarbonization and contributing to Germany’s goal of freeing itself from fossil fuels.
Strategic collaboration with BASF
In parallel, BASF, the German chemical giant, has secured a long-term agreement for the supply of renewable electricity . This collaboration will be critical to ensuring the energy needed for BASF’s chemical production in Europe, especially in a context of growing demand for sustainable energy. Vattenfall will repurchase the Nordlicht shares that BASF acquired in 2024, further strengthening the collaboration between the two companies.
One of the most innovative aspects of this project is the incorporation of low-emission steel into the wind turbine towers. This change will reduce the project’s carbon footprint by 16% , consolidating Vattenfall’s position as a leader in energy innovation and sustainability within the renewable energy sector.
Impact of the Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farm
The Nordlicht cluster will have a combined net capacity of over 1.6 GW , equivalent to an annual electricity production of approximately 6 TWh. This production will be key to the region’s clean energy supply and also a significant pillar in the move toward a carbon-free industry.
The Nordlicht project is a clear example of how offshore wind farms are shaping Germany’s energy future, driving both energy sustainability and the decarbonization of the industrial sector.
Although the final investment for the Nordlicht 2 project has been secured, it is still pending the necessary permits, which could modify some project timelines. However, the final investment decision ensures that the first steps toward construction will proceed without hindrance.
