Var Energi confirms productive potential at Goliat Ridge after rigorous well tests

The new evidence increases the presence of quality crude oil in the Barents Sea region, with estimates exceeding 200 million recoverable barrels.

Var Energi ‘s recent appraisal well completed on the Zagato structure within the Goliat Ridge discovery has yielded highly promising results. The company drilled the well just seven kilometers northeast of the Goliat field, and executed two production tests that achieved more than 4,000 barrels of oil per day in each interval.

The potential of the Goliat Ridge field

This discovery continues to improve the quality of the reservoir and supports the similarity of the crude oil to the product being extracted at the Goliath fieldfield, where Var Energi operates. The company believes that this result paves the way for integrating new resources into its portfolio and moving towards sustainable production beyond 2030.

The discovery totals at least 35 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent, with a potential that could exceed 200 mboe when considering prospective volumes in the region. This development consolidates the role of Var Energi and its partner Equinor as key players in the exploration of the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The strategy to connect to the existing Goliath FPSO is part of the plans to integrate Goliath Ridge into the existing infrastructure, which could accelerate the start of production in this new area.

Var Energi has drilled five wells in the Goliat Ridge environment, including a secondary shunt. The recent award of a license in the adjacent area, as part of the 2025 Awards in Predefined Areas, gives it greater prospectivity in a region considered strategic for its growth.

The company’s chief operating officer, Torger Rød, mentioned that these results are fundamental to achieving the goal of maintaining production of between 350,000 and 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day over the next decade.

With these advances, Var Energi strengthens its position as an independent operator in the Barents Sea, aiming to maximize the efficiency of the resources already discovered while expanding its exploratory horizon in one of the most relevant regions for the European energy future.
