Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the discovery of a new oil reserve in the Sirnak province in the south-east of the country. The field, near the mountains of Cudi and Gabar, has a production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day and will be extracted through 100 oil wells.
In his speech at the inauguration ceremony of a solar power plant and other projects in Karapinar municipality, in the central province of Konya, Erdogan said that the crude is of “high quality” and that it will allow Turkey not to depend on other countries in energy and become an energy exporter.
“We have discovered an oil field in the Gabar mountains, near the city of Cizre, with a capacity of about 100,000 barrels per day. We have already started supplying high-quality oil to the refinery,” Erdogan said during a pre-election rally in the city. from Konya.
The president pointed out that the oil was discovered at a depth of 2.6 kilometers deep and that it will cover a tenth of Turkey’s daily consumption. In addition, he indicated that the camp is named after the teacher Aybuke Yalcin, assassinated in 2017 by militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
New oil field worth ‘tens of billions’ of dollars
The Turkish president assured that the reserves are worth “tens of billions” of dollars and mentioned that Turkey had already started to supply high-quality oil to the refinery.
This is not the first oil discovery recently announced by the Turkish president. In December last year, Erdogan reported the discovery of a field in southeastern Turkey with 150 million barrels of net oil reserves, valued at $12 billion.
