Toyota and Harvia introduce first hydrogen-powered sauna

This sauna represents a step towards creating emission-free thermal experiences that respect the cultural essence while adopting clean technologies.
La calefacción sostenible para espacios de bienestar Toyota y Harvia

Toyota and Harvia have developed the first sauna operated entirely with hydrogen. This project is presented as a sustainable proposal within the context of carbon neutrality, which seeks to reinvent Finnish tradition with cutting-edge technology.

Sustainable heating promoted by Toyota and Harvia

The concept model utilizes hydrogen combustion technology developed by Toyota to generate hot air and steam without CO₂ emissions. The system channels heat to the sauna stones, producing a natural steam by pouring water over them. This technique is reminiscent of the classic Finnish smoke sauna, but with a completely carbon-free energy source.

The new concept will be showcased at the World Sauna Forum on June 4-5, 2025, and at the Rally Finland from July 31-August 2. These events will serve as a stage to validate the thermal use of hydrogen in everyday situations and its potential to become a viable energy alternative in wellness-focused industries.

Toyota’s participation is based on its strategy of promoting the use of hydrogen as an essential energy vector to achieve climate neutrality. Harvia brings its expertise in sauna design and manufacturing, with a global presence and a philosophy focused on efficiency and sustainability. The partnership was facilitated by the Central Finland Mobility Foundation(Cefmof), in collaboration with the City of Jyväskylä and Toyota GAZOO Racing.
