The city of Liverpool, England, has submitted detailed proposals for the construction of the world’s largest wave energy generator on the River Mersey. This tidal power project, known as Mersey Tidal Power, is shaping up to be the largest tidal range scheme globally, with the capacity to supply electricity to more than one million homes for more than 120 years.
Mersey Tidal Power: a tidal energy mega-project
Mersey Tidal Power‘s dam-like design would act as a barrier between the Irish Sea and a tidal basin. It would be equipped with turbines to take advantage of one of the largest tidal ranges in the UK, allowing power generation in both directions of tidal flow.
This project would connect Liverpool to the Wirral peninsula, potentially providing a new pedestrian and cycling link across the Mersey, as well as serving as a future flood defence.
Currently, the multi-million dollar project is in Phase 3 of conceptual development and is about to move into the formal planning stage. Its construction is expected to generate thousands of local jobs, although the planning and permitting process will take several years.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool Metropolitan Region, has stated that, despite the significant technical and financial challenges still to be overcome, the proposals submitted represent considerable progress towards the realization of the Mersey Tidal Power.
