At Marintec China 2023, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has revealed the acquisition of a monumental order: six state-of-the-art vehicle carriers , each with a capacity of 10,800 vehicles. These massive cargo carriers represent an unprecedented advancement in the industry, as they are the first in the world to offer a capacity of more than 10,000 vehicle spaces.

Innovation in shipbuilding and energy sustainability

Designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI), the vehicle carriers will feature 14 decks for the transportation of all types of automobiles , including new energy vehicles powered by sustainable sources such as hydrogen, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas. This eco-friendly option is a step towards sustainability as the shipping industry looks to reduce its carbon emissions.

These dual-propulsion vessels are also part of an agreement with Hyundai Glovis, one of South Korea’s leading shipping companies. Once built, the vehicle carriers will be intended to operate on international routes, expanding Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding’s presence in the global market.

International leadership in vehicle carriers

The order for these six giant vessels brings the total number of units ordered from Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding to 16, further consolidating its position as a leader in the construction of large-capacity vessels. This development also reflects a shift towards the use of cleaner propulsion technologies in the shipbuilding industry, which aligns with global emissions reduction initiatives.

The shipping industry is faced with an urgent need to improve energy efficiency and sustainability, and this new series of dual-fuel vehicle carriers marks an important step towards meeting these goals.
