Stafford County Public Schools and Madison Energy Infrastructure (MEI) unveiled Virginia’s largest school solar energy system, installed on the rooftop of North Stafford High School. This 1.8 MW project, comprised of 3,300 solar panels, is expected to save about $2.8 million in electricity bills over the next 25 years.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, prominent figures including Dr. Heather Boushey, chief economist for the U.S. Investment Cabinet, and Virginia State Senators Tara Durant and Jeremy McPike were on hand to highlight the importance of the project. Also in attendance were local leaders, including Dr. Pamela Yeung, a member of the County Board of Supervisors, and Maureen Siegmund, chair of the Stafford School Board.
Chris R. Fulmer, interim superintendent of Stafford County Public Schools, said the installation of this rooftop solar system not only reduces the environmental footprint, but also serves as an educational tool for students. Thanks to this initiative, students will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about the benefits of renewable energy and its impact on sustainability.
The largest school solar power system
In addition to providing economic savings, the solar installation will generate more than 54 million kilowatt hours of clean energy, offsetting the emission of 41,583 tons ofCO2. This project, which stands out for its size, contributes to a greener outlook and will serve as an inspirational model for other school districts.
Rich Allevi, MEI’s vice president of energy solutions, said this collaboration with Stafford Public Schools is a monumental example for school systems in Virginia.
This project demonstrates how prioritizing clean energy can generate significant savings and provide continuing education in the field of renewable energy.
he explained.
For Maureen Siegmund, president of the Stafford School Board, this solar panel system marks a breakthrough for the school division and provides real-world educational opportunities for students. Through the Solar Empowered Schools MEI’s Solar Empowered Schools curriculum, students will have access to real-time data from the solar panels. solar panels and will benefit from hands-on lessons on energy and the environment.
Impact on the Stafford community
The dr. Pamela Yeung, a member of the County Board of Supervisors, noted that this project inspires environmental environmental stewardship in both students and the community at large. With initiatives like this, Stafford County is moving toward a more sustainable future that is conscious of environmental impact and committed to education in clean energy.
The school solar system at North Stafford High School is a demonstration of how renewable energy can be effectively integrated into schools, providing economic and educational benefits. The completion of this project sets a precedent for other school districts in Virginia and nationally.
