TotalEnergies, which operates the OML 58 onshore license in Nigeria with a 40% interest alongside Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd (NNPCL) with 60%, has approved the Final Investment Decision (FID) to develop the Ubeta gas field. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the region’s energy projects.
Located approximately 80 km northwest of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, the OML 58 area is already home to two producing fields: the Obagi oil field and the Ibewa gas and condensate field. Gas production at OML 58 is processed at the Obite treatment center, which supplies both the Nigerian domestic gas market and the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) plant.
Ubeta gas field development
The Ubeta gas condensate field, also at OML 58, will be developed through a new group of six wells connected to the existing Obite facilities via an 11 km buried pipeline. Production is expected to start in 2027, reaching a level of 300 MMcfgd (about 70,000 boed, including condensate).
The Ubeta gas will go to NLNG, a liquefaction plant on Bonny Island, in which TotalEnergies holds a 15% interest.
This development is distinguished by its low emissions and reduced costs, taking advantage of the existing gas processing infrastructure at OML 58. The carbon intensity of the project will further decrease with the installation of a 5 MW solar plant at Obite and electrification of the drilling platform .
Importantly, TotalEnergies works closely with NNPCL to increase local content, with over 90% of work hours performed locally.
Ubeta is the latest in a series of projects developed by TotalEnergies in Nigeria, including Ikike and Akpo West. We are delighted to launch this new gas project, made possible by recent government incentives for non-associated gas developments. Ubeta aligns perfectly with our strategy of low-cost, low-emission projects and will contribute to the Nigerian economy through increased NLNG exports.
