The Tesla company, led by tycoon Elon Musk, has won an exemption specifically for the Cybertruck’s“drive-by-wire system” from Transport Canada, improving the outlook for the vehicle’s launch in the Canadian market.
Tesla obtains exemption from Transport Canada
Canada is postulated as the only secure market for Cybertruck in the coming months. Tesla continues to consider other international markets, despite the minority demand for vans outside of North America and the regulatory challenges established in each region.
Cybertruck’s unique design could make it difficult to certify in other markets, likely requiring design modifications to comply with local regulations. For example, Transport Canada, to a large extent, follows U.S. regulations, which makes it easier to get approval in both countries, although it should be noted that there are some important differences.
In Canada, Tesla needed to obtain a particular exemption for the Cybertruck’s drive-by-wire system, allowing the vehicle to exceed the minimum steering angle of ±270 degrees. This exemption is important for the implementation of the Cybertruck’s highly variable steering system, which does not meet the minimum steering angle required in standard testing.
Transport Canada has confirmed that the Cybertruck, manufactured or imported by Teslais exempt from complying with section 7.9.4 of Technical Standards Document No. 126, relating to Electronic Stability Control Systems for Light Vehicles, as set out in subsection 126 (1) of Schedule IV of the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations.
