China’s new C919 narrow-body jet has made its first commercial flight, CGTN television reported. In the future, the C919 will be produced in configurations from 158 to 192 seats.
China Eastern flight MU9191 bound for Beijing, which departed from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport at 10:32 (GMT+8) on Sunday, May 28, landed at the capital’s international airport around 1:00 p.m. the same day the aircraft made the return leg.
Developed by the China Commercial Aeronautical Corporation (Comac), the new aircraft made its maiden test flight in May 2017 and was certified airworthy in September 2022.
Taking Off To New Horizons: The C919 Takes Chinese Aviation To New Heights
In March 2021, China Eastern Airlines signed a contract with Comac for the acquisition of an initial batch of five C919 aircraft. The first of these aircraft was delivered in December 2022 and joined the China Eastern fleet in early February. It is a C919 with capacity for 164 passengers: eight in business class and 156 in economy.
By the end of 2022, Comac had received 1,035 orders from 32 customers for the new model, according to the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission. In total, Comac plans to sell at least 2,000 units of this model.
