Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding starts construction of second 9,000 CEU PCTC vessel from Grimaldi

This is the second to be added to the fleet ordered by Grimaldi under the vessel modernization strategy.

On September 14, 2024, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation(CSSC), officially began construction of the second PCTC(Pure Car and Truck Carrier) vessel for the Italian Grimaldi Group .

Grimaldi’s second PCTC vessel

This new vessel, capable of carrying up to 9,000 CEUs(car equivalent units), is the fifth PCTC to be built by the Chinese shipyard by 2024 and is part of Grimaldi’s Italian fleet renewal plan.

The PCTC will have a length of 199.9 meters, a beam of 38 meters and a draft of 9.2 meters. In addition, its design speed will be 19 knots, and it will be powered by a MAN B&W 7S60MEC10.6-HPSCR engine that complies with Tier II/III emissions regulations. This vessel has been designed with advanced technology to minimize CO₂ emissions.

This is the second of several vessels ordered by Grimaldi as part of its strategy to modernize its fleet and increase its capacity to transport cars and trucks on international routes. These vessels are prepared for future retrofitting with fuels more environmentally friendly fuels.
