Scottish company HonuWorx has revealed ambitious plans to launch a fleet of Loggerhead submarines , marking a breakthrough in the underwater robotics industry . These autonomous submarines are designed to transform the deployment and maintenance of underwater vehicles by eliminating traditionally fossil-fuel-powered surface vessels.
This innovative system significantly reduces emissions, with the potential to save the equivalent of the emissions of 4,000 gasoline-powered vehicles for every surface ship displaced. In addition, the all-electric Loggerhead submersibles allow operation from any location in the world via a cloud connection, expanding their applications for inspection, maintenance and repair in sectors such as oil, gas and wind energy .
Loggerhead submarines will be a success in sustainability
The firm, which recently completed trials off the Canadian coast in collaboration with Cellula Robotics and companies including TotalEnergies and Shell, has successfully demonstrated the deployment of an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) from an autonomous submarine. This feat underlines the viability and environmental impact of the Loggerhead system, the first commercial unit of which is expected in 2025.
With a $3.2 billion market for subsea services , HonuWorx is positioning itself as a pioneer in robotics for the blue economy , seeking to capture 20% of the global market in the next decade. In addition, the company plans to triple its team and secure £30 million in investment funding in the coming years.
With the energy transition in full swing, HonuWorx CEO Lee Wilson says their technology will transform underwater work , offering a clean and safe alternative for an industry with growing demands for sustainability.
