Inspenet, June 21, 2023.
Last Sunday June 18, a submarine called Titan operated by the company OceanGate Expeditions and with five crew members on board disappeared into the depths of the ocean while descending to visit the remains of the Titanic. The adverse conditions have unleashed multiple hypotheses and the fate of the passengers remains shrouded in uncertainty.
The company that owns the vessel said in a statement that “they are exploring and mobilizing all their options to return the crew safe and sound,” while emphasizing the fact that they are focused on the members of the expedition and your families.
Titan is capable of diving to 4,000 meters and has oxygen for 96 hours, so the time to find the passengers is shortened. It was scheduled to surface Monday afternoon, but never did.
The search intensifies: The United States Coast Guard has deployed several planes and boats to find the submarine.
Time is pressing and the chances of finding people alive are diminishing. Therefore, the underwater inspection is contributing in various ways to the search for the missing equipment. The seabed in the area is being mapped to identify possible spots where the sub might have rested and thus get clues as to what happened to it and where it may be.
Likewise, a series of devices and equipment have been used for this intense search; These include remote-controlled vehicles (ROVs), which are unmanned vehicles that can be controlled remotely from the surface and are equipped with various sensors such as cameras, sonars, and manipulators. These are capable of searching for remains and even recovering objects from the bottom.
On the other hand, there are submersibles, which are manned vehicles equipped with various sensors and life support systems that can be used to explore the seabed in more detail than ROVs.
Other technological devices that help in this search are magnetometers, devices capable of detecting magnetic fields. These can be used to search for wreckage from the submarine, as its metal hull will create a magnetic field.
It is important to mention that several ships from Europe have joined the search. Among them, a Norwegian ship equipped with autonomous underwater robots and a French ship that was sent after some noises were detected near the area where the submarine was last located.
As the clock ticks, the search for Titan does not stop, so the coming together of all these vessels to achieve the goal is truly significant.
Hope does not disappear: the crucial role of technological equipment
The search for the missing submarine is an arduous task, but inspection plays a valuable role. The pressure that an ROV can withstand depends on its design and construction materials. However, most are designed to withstand pressures up to 6,000 psi, which is equivalent to the pressure at a depth of 4,000 meters (13,100 feet).
In fact, ROVs designed to operate in deeper water often have thicker hulls and stronger materials. In addition to the pressure resistance of the hull, the pressure resistance of the internal components of the ROV is also important. Electronics, batteries and other elements must be able to withstand the high pressures exerted by the depth of the sea. With advanced underwater technology, the hope of finding missing passengers alive in the depths of the ocean remains.
