Stena Line acquires Wasaline and expands in the Baltics

The Vaasa-Umeå route becomes the first international green shipping corridor thanks to the use of biogas and batteries on the ferry Aurora Bothnia.

Stena Line has announced the acquisition of NLC Ferry Ab Oy, the Finnish operator that operates the route between Vaasa (Finland) and Umeå (Sweden) under the brand name Wasaline. This move consolidates its position in the Baltic Sea and marks a new step in its strategy of intermodal and environmentally friendly mobility.

Consolidation of a strategic ecological route

The crossing between Vaasa and Umeå will remain operational with the vessel Aurora vessel Aurora Bothniaa hybrid ferry that combines biogas and batteries to reduce emissions. Although the vessel will continue to be owned by Kvarken Link, it will now be operated by Stena Line, allowing for projected improvements in efficiency and sustainability.

Regional alliance with a long-term vision

The route between Vaasa and Umeå has been supported by the local authorities since 2012 through the joint venture Kvarken Link. With this integration, the aim is to ensure continuity of service and facilitate its growth. The municipal councils of both cities must approve the operation before its official closure, scheduled for early 2026.

With this fifth route on the Baltic SeaStena Line strengthens its presence in Northern Europe and positions itself as a benchmark in low-emission maritime transport. The experience gained on the ecological corridor Vaasa-Umeå could be applied to future routes.
