Akuo, a leading renewable energy developer and producer, was selected to carry out an agrovoltaic project, awarded by the Portuguese National Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. This initiative is being developed within the Portuguese Agricultural Innovation Agenda and is financially supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) supported by NextGenerationEU funds.

Multisectoral collaboration for agrovoltaic project

The project is a collaboration between ten different entities, such as INIAV (National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research), an educational center, a producers’ association and several public and private entities in the agricultural sector.

The FruitPV experimental project will be implemented at INIAV’s innovation center. Akuo, together with its exclusive partner Agriterra, which will be responsible for designing, implementing and monitoring the most suitable agrovoltaic solutions for the Fuji apple variety. With this project, the company intends to establish several pilot models to identify the most efficient and commercially viable solution.

Agrovoltaic represents an integral response to both the energy transition and the energy transition and for agricultural development, and the European Union is particularly encouraging these projects.

The results of this experimental initiative will be documented in reports and articles that will evaluate the different solutions and optimization measures applied. In addition, the adaptability of these solutions to other crops, such as pome fruit and cherry trees, will be investigated and a corporate pilot model will be created to establish a renewable energy community. renewable energy .

This project seeks to connect agrovoltaic production with local consumers, such as fruit cold storage warehouses, which have high energy consumption.

Akuo and Agriterra in action

Akuo and Agriterra, with 15 years of experience in agrovoltaic projects since their first initiative on Reunion Island in 2009, have developed 20 projects in various geographical locations and bioclimatic conditions. These technological solutions have been refined to suit the specific needs of farmers and crops. The consortium involved in this project in Portugal will take advantage of the vast experience and knowledge accumulated by Akuo and Agriterra in different types of agriculture.

In addition to the implementation of agrovoltaic projects, Akuo is exploring new technologies to optimize renewable and agricultural energy production. One of the innovations under study is the integration of intelligent irrigation systems that use meteorological and soil data to maximize water efficiency, thus improving agricultural productivity and reducing the consumption of natural resources.
