A new wave of public investment is positioning Spain as a benchmark in renewable hydrogen. renewable hydrogen. The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has allocated 524 million euros, from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), to five green hydrogen projects selected by the European Commission under the IPCEI Hy2Use umbrella.

Five large-scale green hydrogen projects

The five initiatives are located in Aragon, Andalusia, Asturias, the Basque Country and Murcia, and have a combined electrolysis capacity of 425 megawatts. This infrastructure, powered by solar solar, wind and hydroThe infrastructure, powered by solar, wind and hydroelectric sources, will generate some 55,200 tons of green hydrogen per year.

Four of the projects – located in Cadiz, Asturias, Bizkaia and Cartagena – incorporate 100 MW electrolyzers in areas of high industrial density. There, the hydrogen produced will be consumed locally in steel mills, refineries, chemical plants and cement plants, reducing the use of gray hydrogen and facilitating decarbonization.

A unique case in Teruel

The fifth project, Ver-Amonia, will be located in Utrillas (Teruel). Unlike the other projects, this one is part of the Technology Field 2 of the IPCEI Hy2Use. Its objective is to use green hydrogen for the manufacture of fertilizers. manufacture of fertilizersThe plant, with a capacity of 25 MW of electrolysis and an expected production of 15,000 tons of green ammonia per year.

Public-private partnership to accelerate transition

The total investment exceeds 800 million euros, 65% of which is co-financed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), a body under the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade (MITECO). The beneficiaries include companies such as Petronor (Repsol), EDP and Fertinagro, in collaboration with other industrial entities.

This deployment of industrial clusters powered by renewable hydrogen is a key step towards a less carbon-intensive industry. It also positions Spain as one of the driving forces of green hydrogen in Europe, in line with the EU objectives of energy transition and strategic autonomy.
