Sonnedix secures operation of its hybrid solar plant in Lousada, Portugal

The company is driving a structural change in its project portfolio in Portugal by integrating solar, wind and BESS systems.

The company Sonnedix has started construction of its 36.8 MW photovoltaic facility in the Portuguese municipality of Paredes, Porto district. This project was named Sonnedix Lousada, which increases the firm’s solar operating capacity in Portugal to more than 300 MW.

The energy potential of the hybrid solar plant

The Lousada plant joins three other company facilities in the country: Douro, Bustelo and Lordelo, inaugurated during the first half of 2025. Together, they strengthen the company’s commitment to sustainable growth and renewable generation in the region.

With this new solar plant in operation since mid-December, Sonnedix consolidates its expansion strategy in a market that has shown remarkable dynamism since its entry in 2022. In addition to the production of clean energyemissions, the project will contribute to avoiding the emission of some 19,600 tons of CO₂e per year.

The company has worked closely with local authorities and neighboring communities to adapt the design and operation of the plant to the needs of the territory. An investment of one million euros is planned for environmental and social improvement actions in the area, with the aim of increasing its ecological value and promoting sustainable development.

Sonnedix is driving a structural change in its project portfolio in Portugal by integrating solar, wind and battery storage systems(BESS). This transition will make it possible to respond more efficiently to demand curves and strengthen the stability of the electricity system.

The first hybrid solutions with batteries are expected to start operating from 2026, positioning Sonnedix as a player in the development of flexible and decentralized energy models in Portugal.

Axel Thiemann, CEO of the company, mentioned that Lousada symbolizes a strategic advance for Sonnedix in its consolidation in the Portuguese market. Beatriz Llorente, responsible for Growth in Iberia, emphasized that the country already represents a central piece in the company’s European portfolio, which plans to exceed 700 MW of total capacity in Portugal.
