Solaris Bus & Coach has delivered the first of 137 hydrogen buses ordered for Bologna and Ferrara, Italy. This delivery marks the initial phase of a major order placed by transport operator TPER at the end of 2023. The contract provides for the delivery of Urbino 12 buses , a zero-emission model that is presented as an environmentally sustainable solution for public transport in the Emilia-Romagna region.

The operator TPER will receive 137 buses, of which the first 37 have already entered into circulation. These buses will be configured in two versions: 70 three-door buses for urban routes and 67 two-door buses for urban and suburban lines, which will facilitate better connectivity between the cities and their metropolitan area.

The Urbino 12 hydrogen buses are state-of-the-art vehicles. They operate on a 70 kW fuel cell, which integrates hydrogen with oxygen to generate electrical energy, with water vapour as the only by-product. In addition, they have a hydrogen storage capacity of 37.5 kg, allowing them to offer silent and emission-free operation.

The investment in buses is co-financed by the European Union through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan ( PNRR ), underlining the region’s commitment to the transition towards cleaner and more efficient public transport.

The delivery of these hydrogen buses in Italy strengthens Solaris’ presence as one of the leading manufacturers of hydrogen buses in Europe, with more than 430 vehicles of this type delivered to cities in various European countries, such as Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden and France.
