The innovative train manufactured in China was scheduled to operate yesterday.

In spite of the expectations generated by the launching of Argentina’s solar train, located in the Quebrada in Jujuy, the project’s Executing Unit unexpectedly announced the suspension and delay of its first trip, as well as the interruption of ticket sales.

This decision was made just when the opening of ticket sales had been confirmed, highlighting the entity’s commitment to carry out additional technical tests to ensure the optimal operation of the service.

Jujuy’s solar train: The reason for suspension

The authorities explained that, although track and timing tests have been successful so far, it is necessary to extend this period in order to offer maximum guarantees of safety and efficiency in the service. Juan Cabrera, president of the Ente Autárquico del Tren Solar, mentioned that a start date has not yet been set due to ongoing evaluations.

Cabrera also ruled out that the delays are linked to the quality of the material used for the tracks, but attributed the delay to the need to incorporate additional water works as a result of the recent rains. He stressed that these minor works are being carried out in order to avoid any inconvenience that may arise due to weather conditions, thus ensuring that the service will not face interruptions once it starts operating.

About Argentina’s solar train

The two train carriages were manufactured by the Chinese company Corporation Limited (CRRC) This is not surprising given the collaboration of the province of Jujuy with the Asian country in recent years.

The upper part of each of the two carriages carries six lithium batteries, with a range of up to 120 km. These are connected to a charger the size of a giant refrigerator that is powered at the terminal stations in part with solar energy .

The glass roof contrasts with the aridity of the Jujuy altiplano. The huge windows of the carriages (with capacity for 73 people) allow a panoramic view of a World Heritage Site.

The train travels on the recovered tracks of the former Belgrano Railway’s C branch, abandoned in the 1990s after the privatization of part of the Argentine railway system.

It is important to highlight that on December 7, 2023, the Tren Solar de la Quebrada made its first trip from Volcán to Tilcara. from Volcán to Tilcara.

If it had been released, the schedule would have been every day from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
