Sofia offshore wind farm: 50% progress with 51 turbines installed

The Sofia farm incorporates recyclable blades and already has 51 turbines installed off the British coast.

The Sofia offshore wind farm recently reached 51 wind turbines installed, of the targeted 100, exceeding 50% of the project’s progress. The project, which will have a total of 100 SG 14-222 DD wind turbines, is on schedule for commissioning in 2026.

The Wind Peak operated by the Danish company Cadeler, is responsible for the transport and installation of the turbines from the port of Hull and has the capacity to transport and install up to six complete 14 MW turbine sets in a single trip.

Sofia is the UK’s first offshore wind farm to use large-scale recyclable large-scale recyclable blades The blades are coated with a special resin that, at the end of the blade’s useful life (around 30 years), allows the materials to be separated and recycled into new products such as car parts, bicycle helmets or suitcases.

Energy impact to date

The installation of the 51 turbines is a significant achievement, which comes on the heels of the successful installation of the 100 monopile 100 monopile bases that will support each of Siemens Gamesa’s SG 14-222 DD turbines, one of the largest models in the world. The project also strengthens the local supply chain, involving UK port infrastructure and specialist contractors.

Once it starts operations, scheduled for 2026, it will be able to generate 1.4 GW, enough energy to supply the equivalent of 1.2 million British homes.
