Technology company SLB has signed a series of contracts with Mubadala Energy to perform offshore drilling services on the Tangkulo gas field offshore gas field in Tangkulo, located in the Andaman Sea, off the coast of Indonesia. This strategic alliance is part of a long-term plan to strengthen the country’s energy supply and achieve first gas production before the end of 2028.
SLB will deploy an integrated services model that will encompass all phases of the well life cycle. The company will apply specialized solutions including directional drilling, fluids, cementing, testing, completions, wireline and real-time downhole monitoring. This execution is designed to reduce risk, improve well placement and optimize operational efficiency in complex offshore environments.
Tangkulo gas development as a strategic focus
Mubadala Energy says that the development of the Tangkulo project not only represents a step forward in its Southeast Asian portfolio, but also underscores its commitment to the energy transition. The award to SLB was made through a competitive bidding process, highlighting the firm’s ability to execute integrated offshore operations.
The block where the project will be developed is located in an area with challenging geological conditions, which requires highly specialized drilling solutions. SLB, with a presence in more than 100 countries, will provide global expertise and state-of-the-art offshore technology to ensure efficient execution.
Projected production and energy future
The common goal is to achieve the extraction of the first commercial volume of gas before the end of 2028. Both SLB and Mubadala Energy agree that this offshore offshore development will contribute significantly to Indonesia’s energy security and lay the foundation for future regional projects.
