Canadian company Sintana Energy confirmed the start of the 3D seismic exploration campaign in block OFF-1, located off the coast of Uruguay. The survey, executed by Viridien using the vessel BGP Prospector, will cover approximately 4,300 km². The first phase will run from February to April 2026.
Under the agreement reached in 2025, Chevron acts as operator of the block with a 60% stake, while Sintana retains the remaining 40% on a non-operated basis. The total program cost is fully funded by Chevron, allowing Sintana to advance without committing its own resources.
Key Data from the 3D Seismic Exploration
The first fast-track data is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2026. Complete results, processed with PSDM (Pre-Stack Depth Migration) technology, will be available in the second quarter of 2027. This information will be key to defining the exploratory potential of the area.
The campaign marks progress in Uruguay’s energy strategy. Despite legal attempts to halt the activity, the courts upheld the consultation process and environmental permits, establishing a robust legal framework for offshore development. The government has shown intent to expand activity in other licenses.
Regional Expansion and Next Stages
This operation strengthens Sintana’s portfolio in the conjugate margin of the South Atlantic, where it also holds interests in Namibia and Angola. The company seeks to position itself as a relevant player in frontier regions through partnerships with major operators.
Further updates are expected as acquisition progresses in the second season (November 2026 to April 2027). The goal is to have a solid data foundation to evaluate future exploratory wells in Uruguayan offshore waters, a region beginning to attract global attention.
