Sinopec announced that the first phase of the Qijiang shale gas field has revealed a major discovery in the Sichuan Basin, with a proven geological reserve of 145.968 million cubic meters.

The discovery, presented by Sinopec Exploration Company and Sinopec Southwest Oil & Gas Company, is a breakthrough in Sinopec’s “Deep Earth Project – Sichuan and Chongqing Natural Gas Base”.

The Qijiang shale gas field is the first shale gas field discovered in deep and medium strata in a complex tectonic zone at the edge of the basin.

Shale gas accumulated at depths greater than 3,500 meters is defined as deep shale, and the geological depth of Qijiang shale formations ranges from 1,900 to 4,500 meters, with the majority being deep shale. With complex strata located above the formation of interest, the project faced major challenges, such as significantly greater depth and variable subsurface stresses.

To address the question of how a shale gas reservoir formed at the edge of the basin with such complex conditions on the surface and in the subsurface, the Sinopec team carried out more than 10,000 laboratory analysis tests on coronas and witnesses with a depth of 1,320 meters. This revealed the pore development and support mechanism of the deep shale and identified that the deep shale can develop huge reservoirs with high porosity, and also the points where accumulation is potentially higher, in order to project drill targets into the shale. deep.
