Researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have developed a machine capable of transforming cockroaches into cyborgs in just 68 seconds . This technological breakthrough has the potential to transform rescue operations and environmental monitoring thanks to the speed and precision of the process.
A “machine that makes cyborg cockroaches”
The automated device installs small electronic backpacks on cockroaches that allow their movements to be controlled by stimulating their antennae. This method surpasses traditional manual techniques, which require specialized skills and about 30 minutes per insect.
The cockroaches’ compact design and innate abilities, such as the ability to navigate rough terrain , make them ideal for tasks in hard-to-reach areas. The machine saves time and enables mass production of these augmented insects , opening up possibilities in areas such as rubble rescue, gas detection and covert surveillance.
Advantages of cyborg cockroaches
In addition to their energy efficiency, cyborg cockroaches can be easily bred, significantly reducing costs compared to developing similar robots. Equipped with sensors, they could be essential for detecting dangerous chemicals, identifying survivors in disasters and monitoring air quality.
Although the current system relies on human control, researchers are working on methods to coordinate swarms of cyborg cockroaches autonomously. This advance could allow the insects to collaborate on complex tasks , maximizing their usefulness in critical situations.
The machine already marks a breakthrough in bio-robotic integration technology. However, there are still challenges to overcome in order to optimize its implementation in real-world scenarios.
