Shell has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan to carry out exploration activities in the Zhanaturmys oil and gas block, located in the western Aktobe region. This block covers 1,377 square kilometers and is situated within one of the country’s main productive basins.

Under the contract, which will be valid until 2032, the British energy company will conduct three-dimensional seismic surveys, advanced geological data collection, and technical evaluations in compliance with local regulations. The potential drilling of a deep exploratory well is also contemplated, which could open new production opportunities in the area.

Contract in Kazakhstan and regional context

In addition to technical tasks, Shell has committed to allocating at least 100 million tenge to the socio-economic development of the region during the contractual period. This investment seeks to strengthen ties with local communities amidst a context marked by the need to balance energy growth and social responsibility.

This strategic move occurs in a complex scenario for Shell in Kazakhstan. The company participates in other major projects in the country, such as the North Caspian Production Sharing Agreement and the Karachaganak field, both currently undergoing international arbitration processes due to financial and contractual disagreements. Despite these legal tensions, Shell reaffirms its interest in continuing to operate within Kazakh territory.

Zhanaturmys and the energy commitment in Central Asia

The Zhanaturmys block represents a key opportunity to consolidate the company’s presence in Central Asia, at a time when hydrocarbon exploration remains vital for global energy security.

The execution of this new agreement could redefine Kazakhstan’s role as an energy resource provider, with Shell as a prominent technical and financial player.
