SGN has announced a one-year delay and rescheduling of the main hydrogen heating network in Fife, Scotland. All this due to problems in the supply chain and acquisitions, postponing its activation until 2025.

The main hydrogen heating network

The €32 million project was initially planned to operate this year, supplying approximately 300 homes in Buckhaven and Denbeath with green hydrogen. For now, more than 65% of the 8.2 kilometer infrastructure and progress on production and storage facilities have been completed, with the start of the installation of an electrolyzer.

The demonstration homes are built and are being equipped with necessary appliances, including hydrogen boilers supplied by Baxi since March 2023. This project manages to provide data to the UK government for its decision in 2026 on the use of hydrogen in home heating, after other projects were ruled out due to local opposition.

Despite the potential benefits of hydrogen as a zero-emissions solution, public acceptance and perception remain obstacles. The local government works based on SNG to establish a favorable and positive energy landscape for the future.
