Sandvik continues to demonstrate its leadership in the mining industry with a remarkable achievement in Scandinavia. Thanks to the incorporation of cutting-edge technology, the group has broken drilling records. This feat was made possible through the use of innovative tools, such as the new Sandvik RR890 pilot bit.

Record for drilling a ventilation shaft

This impressive progress was recorded at the Zinkgruvan mine in southern Sweden, where the Drillcon Group , known for its expertise in complex drilling operations, began the drilling project for the expansion of the Dalby mine. The challenge was to drill a ventilation shaft over 700 meters in a single pass , something that, with the right tools, became an achievable task.

Sandvik drilling solutions have significantly optimized performance in this type of work. The use of the RR890 pilot drill, which includes PowerCarbide® inserts and a 12EL reaming head, enabled a 69% increase in performance compared to previous versions. Operators reported a smoother, more reliable, and more consistent drilling process, with a noticeable reduction in operating times.

Russell Clayton, Raise Drilling Product Manager at Sandvik Rock Tools, highlighted that the Drillcon team managed to complete a 700-meter hole without needing to replace any cutters, underscoring the strength and durability of Sandvik tools. This type of innovation improves efficiency and reduces operational risks , making Sandvik an indispensable partner for mining companies seeking high-performance and sustainable results.

The use of advanced tools is not only key to the success of projects like Zinkgruvan, but also reaffirms Sandvik’s role as a leader in the mining industry, providing technological solutions that optimize efficiency and reduce operating costs.
