Samsung SDI has taken a key step in the race to lead energy supply for physical artificial intelligence. During the InterBattery 2026 fair held in Seoul, the company officially presents its first solid-state battery under development with a pouch-type design, intended for applications such as humanoid robots, robotic platforms, and advanced wearable devices.
Pouch-Type Solid-State Battery for Humanoid Robots
The pouch-type design addresses the need for compact, lightweight structures with high energy density, essential for robots facing space constraints and intensive performance demands. These batteries can withstand power peaks and maintain extended autonomy, making them ideal for physical AI.
Samsung SDI thus diversifies its strategy beyond the prismatic format traditionally focused on electric vehicles, expanding its reach into emerging sectors such as robotics, aviation, and next-generation wearable devices.
Backup Solutions for Critical Infrastructure
At the heart of the exhibition, the South Korean firm also showcases its U8A1 prismatic battery based on LMO, designed for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems in data centers. This solution provides energy stability even during demand peaks driven by AI workloads, reducing required space by up to 33% compared to previous versions.
Alongside the U8A1, the high-power BBU battery is exhibited, which connects directly to servers to provide immediate backup. This addition improves operational safety, extends data retention, and responds efficiently to unexpected interruptions.
Intelligent Energy Managers for the AI Era
The company also highlights the Samsung Battery Box system (SBB), a comprehensive energy storage solution (ESS) equipped with high-nickel prismatic cells and the EDI safety system. The SBB 1.5, a 20-foot container unit, exemplifies the scalability and robustness required for industrial environments.
For the first time, Samsung Battery Intelligence (SBI) software is also presented, a monitoring tool based on AI algorithms trained with data from over 1,400 ESS installations worldwide. This system predicts irregularities, estimates cell lifespan, and helps prevent potential risks, becoming a strategic ally for preventive energy management.
Applied Innovation in Prismatic and Cylindrical Formats
Samsung SDI also showcases its 700 Wh/L prismatic battery, which enables ranges of up to 800 kilometers in electric vehicles. This product, recognized for its efficiency and fire safety, integrates exclusive technologies such as optimized stacking and thermal propagation prevention.
In parallel, power tools with tabless cylindrical batteries exhibit improved charging times and superior cutting capabilities, demonstrating the adaptability of this technology to demanding sectors.
