Samsung Heavy Industries floats Coral Nord FLNG in South Korea

The Coral Nord unit marks a new technical milestone in the development of floating infrastructure for liquefied natural gas.

With an event led by senior officials from Mozambique, Italy and energy industry executives, Samsung Heavy Industries celebrated the launch of the hull of the Coral Nord FLNG facility at its Geoje shipyard.

Impressive technical dimensions of the Coral Nord FLNG

The Coral Nord unit is the second floating the second floating natural gas liquefaction (FLNG) platform (FLNG) that Samsung manufactures for the Italian state-owned energy company ENI. This new project follows Coral Sul, delivered in 2021, consolidating the South Korean shipyard’s expertise in complex maritime solutions.

The structure is 432 meters long and 66 meters wide, with a launch weight of 123,000 tons. These figures position it among the largest of its kind, capable of operating in deep waters off the coast of Mozambique.

Strategic participation and international cooperation

The ceremony was attended by Choi Sung-an (CEO of SHI), Estevao Pale (Mozambican Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy), ENI and JGC executives. and executives from ENI and JGC.. The presence of high-level representatives reinforces the strategic nature of the project for regional energy development.

The preliminary agreement signed in 2023 for 869.4 billion won is progressing towards execution, with an estimated delivery date of 2028. Samsung has accumulated orders for six of the ten FLNG units ordered globally and also continues to work on projects with Shell and Petronas.

Delfin Midstream, with planned operations in US waters, has extended its letter of intent with SHI for a future FLNG unit. A final investment decision is expected to be finalized soon.
