The Salamander Offshore Wind Farm project has reached a significant milestone on its path to constructing a floating offshore wind farm off the east coast of Scotland. The development of this innovative facility recently received planning permission for the necessary onshore infrastructure , including a substation and battery storage that will balance the Scottish electricity grid.

This progress has been made possible thanks to the teamwork of the joint venture formed by Ørsted, Simply Blue Group, and Subsea7, who worked closely with local authorities to meet the strict requirements. The permit was granted by Aberdeenshire Council, in compliance with the legislation established by the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997.
The Salamander floating wind farm, located 35 km off Peterhead, aims to generate enough green energy to power more than 100,000 Scottish homes. This pioneering project advances energy development and marks a step toward the UK government’s goal of achieving 5 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2030.
A key achievement in floating offshore wind energy
Hugh Yendole, Salamander’s project manager, expressed his satisfaction with the approval, highlighting the record time it took to obtain the permit , with the process taking just seven months. Yendole also emphasized that this represents a first for floating offshore wind, as it is the first combined permit for an onshore substation and battery in Scotland.
The Salamander project has environmental and economic implications, strengthening the Scottish supply chain in the floating wind energy sector. With this onshore permit, the project is one step closer to contributing to the decarbonization of the United Kingdom and becoming a benchmark in the development of innovative renewable energy.
Looking ahead to the next steps, the Salamander team is awaiting final approval of the offshore licenses and the granting of a Section 36 permit from the Scottish Government’s Maritime Directorate. Once all permits are completed, the Salamander offshore wind farm could become one of the region’s major clean energy engines.
