The Swedish company Saab informed through a press release that it has been selected by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) to lead the development of a large unmanned underwater vehicle.

With a budget of SEK 60 million, this project seeks to respond to growing strategic needs in underwater surveillance and critical infrastructure protection.

An autonomous submarine for complex operations

The system, identified as LUUV (Large Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle), is designed to operate completely autonomously in exploration, detection and monitoring missions on the seabed. seabed exploration, detection and monitoring missions. Saab will be responsible for its design, integration and testing, with the first phase of sea trials scheduled for summer 2026.

One of the key elements of the LUUV will be the incorporation of the Autonomous Ocean Coredeveloped by Saab. This technology will allow the submarine to navigate, make decisions and perform tasks without direct human intervention, while integrating a sensor platform for data collection and analysis.

In this first stage, LUUV’s mission will focus on surveillance, strategic information gathering and operational decision support.

Sweden is committed to innovation in autonomous defense

For Saab, this project consolidates its leadership in the development of advanced solutions in underwater defense and naval autonomy. In addition, the collaboration with FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces represents a critical synergy to strengthen the capacity to respond to modern underwater threats.

The initiative also aligns with global trends in smart defense, where unmanned systems are playing an increasingly important role in the protection of key infrastructure and strategic maritime spaces.
