Romania and Canada sign agreement on nuclear power project

The signed agreement is worth approximately 240 million euros (360 million Canadian dollars).

SN Nuclearelectrica SA (SNN) and Canadian Nuclear Partners SA (CNPSA) have entered into an agreement to work with nuclear energy. Its objective is to provide project management organization (PMO) services for the preparation and execution of the renovation project of Unit 1 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, located in Romania.

This agreement, which was signed on June 11, is worth approximately 240 million euros.

Strengthening nuclear energy in Romania

The union of these two companies represents a crucial step forward in completing the remodeling of Cernavoda Unit 1, fulfilling the planned development phases.

Under the agreement, CNPSA, a subsidiary of Laurentis Energy Partners (Laurentis), will provide SNN with project management services, technical assistance, consulting services, specific training for the CANDU plant and the organization and coordination of the commissioning of Unit 1 until its commercial restart.

Second, this agreement builds on an earlier contract signed in 2021 between SNN and Laurentis through CNPSA to develop a program to conserve the reactors’ water systems during their refurbishment. Present at the June 11 signing ceremony in Bucharest were Ontario Ministers Todd Smith and Stephen Lecce, Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja, Canadian Ambassador to Romania Gavin Buchan, along with representatives from CNPSA, SNN, Laurentis and Ontario Power Generation.

He highlighted the experience with Canadian-made CANDU technology, which will allow the Unit 1 refurbishment project to be executed on time and on budget, demonstrating how Canadian nuclear experts can support clean energy projects globally.
