Brasil avanza hacia la consolidación de su industria nuclear (según ministro de Energía)

According to Alexandre Silveira, Minister of Mines and Energy, Brazil is in the process of fully establishing its nuclear energy production chain. During an event in Brasilia, Silveira highlighted the need to “sow the seed” to develop the nuclear industry and replace thermal power plants in remote areas with small nuclear reactors.

The minister highlighted that Brazil is one of the three countries that owns the entire uranium production chain , with reserves greater than those of the state oil company Petrobras, according to recent estimates. This resource would position the country as a leader in the nuclear energy sector.

Focus on modular technology for the nuclear industry

Silveira argued that small nuclear modules are the ideal solution for Brazil, given its geographical and infrastructure characteristics. He affirmed the importance of taking seriously the development of this productive chain, which, in his vision, represents the future of safe and sustainable energy in the country.

The minister also mentioned that the country seeks inspiration from the Chinese model to structure its own nuclear production chain, with special focus on small reactors. In addition, an upcoming visit to China in June will serve to deepen understanding and possible collaboration in nuclear technologies.

Currently, Brazil invests nearly 12 billion reais (approximately $2.4 billion) in its diesel thermal power plants . However, with the transition to the use of uranium, a significant cost reduction is expected. Global interest in small nuclear power plants is increasing, as they are seen as a clean and beneficial energy source, free of polluting emissions.

Nuclear export potential

With its vast uranium resource and the development of small reactor technologies, the country is not only on track to transform its domestic energy mix, but also to become a key exporter of nuclear technology and services.

This change would benefit the local economy and position Brazil as an influential player in the global energy market, fostering international collaborations and raising its profile on the world stage.
