German company Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) has made a mark in the space industry by becoming the first private European company to obtain a vertical launch licence . This approval, granted by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), will allow RFA to carry out launches from the SaxaVord spaceport, located in Scotland.

Launch license gives green light to RFA plan

With the space flight operator licence now in its hands, RFA strengthens Europe’s position in independent access to space. This regulatory permit has no time limits and includes a variety of orbits and trajectories , underlining the company’s ability to operate under high standards of safety and efficiency.

The inaugural test launch, scheduled for 2025, will be carried out by the RFA ONE rocket . This vehicle, designed to carry up to 1,300 kg into low Earth orbit, represents a significant technological advance, notably thanks to its Helix engine and the innovative Redshift orbital transfer system.

Commitment to innovation and sustainability

RFA’s Chief Commercial Officer Jörn Spurmann stressed that this licence reflects the company’s technical excellence and its commitment to more sustainable and competitive access to space.

We are laying the foundations for a new era of space exploration and commercialisation, ensuring that Europe remains at the forefront of the global space race.

he stated.

Representatives from the CAA and the UK Space Agency stressed the importance of this collaboration in strengthening the continent’s aerospace capabilities. Matt Archer, Director of Launches at the Space Agency, said that initiatives such as this boost investment and employment and inspire future generations to explore the potential of space.

The future of European space launches

As Europe seeks greater flexibility and autonomy in its launch capabilities, RFA’s achievement represents a significant step forward. The company positions itself as a key player in the small satellite launch services market, offering affordable and efficient solutions directly from European soil.

It is important to note that the RFA ONE rocket is now in the final stages of development and the first test flight is expected to be a turning point in consolidating RFA as a leader in the European space industry.
