Clean technology company Rock Tech Lithium obtained all necessary permits for its lithium refinery in Guben, Germany. The approvals were granted by the Brandenburg State Environmental Office after a rigorous review according to the Federal Immission Control Act.
Rock Tech Lithium ready for production
Rock Tech noted that the new refinery will have the capacity to produce 24,000 tons per year of battery-grade lithium hydroxide. The company’s president and CEO, Dirk Harbecke, described the day as exciting for the company, stressing that Rock Tech not only received all permits to operate its converter in Germany, but is also the first company in Europe to enable a lithium refinery large scale without the need to appeal the project.
Harbecke also thanked the Rock Tech team for their work and the Brandenburg authorities for their support and diligence. This development is in addition to the partial license the company obtained in March last year for its lithium hydroxide conversion plant in Guben.
This license, issued by the Southern Licensing Authority of the Brandenburg State Environmental Office, allowed the company to complete the construction of all non-processing buildings and site infrastructure.
Progress on the lithium refinery at Guben
The approval included the general design and functions of the plant for the conversion of spodumene to lithium hydroxide. In January of last year, Rock Tech also received authorization to begin initial construction work on its lithium converter at Guben, allowing them to begin essential preliminary work, as well as the construction of roads, offices and storage buildings.
In the context of the energy transition, the lithium hydroxide production capacity at Rock Tech Lithium is crucial to the European battery industry, providing a local and sustainable supply of this essential resource. This development is a significant step towards reducing import dependence and improving energy security in the region.
