Researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) have developed an innovative teleoperated robot dog capable of carrying out rescue missions in hazardous environments without putting human lives at risk. Built on the HyQReal platform, this device combines advanced mobility with a handling system powered by high-capacity hydraulic arms.
A robot dog with extreme strength!
Designed by IIT in collaboration with the Italian National Institute for Industrial Accident Insurance (INAIL), the HyQReal stands out for its robustness and versatility. Thanks to its hydraulic system , the robot is able to lift and move heavy objects with greater dexterity than many alternatives with electric actuators.
The quadruped features a structure reinforced with aluminum and Kevlar, ensuring its operability in extreme conditions. In power tests, the HyQReal demonstrated its ability to pull a three-ton aircraft , supported by joints that generate up to 300 newton-meters of torque.
Teleoperation with intuitive control
One of the most notable advances of this robot is its teleoperation system , which allows operators to operate it remotely with an immersive 3D interface. This intuitive control facilitates navigation and manipulation of objects without requiring direct contact.

The front-mounted arms, designed by IIT, extend the robot’s functionality by allowing bimanual manipulation. Each arm weighs 10 kilograms and is capable of lifting up to 5 kilograms , making it a useful tool for rescue assistance and work in high-risk conditions.
Applications in risk scenarios
The aim of this development is to improve safety in the workplace and in emergency situations. The IEEE Spectrum portal mentioned that in previous tests, an earlier version of the robot with a single hydraulic arm was used by Italian firefighters in extinguishing a simulated fire inside a tunnel.
To further optimize its performance, researchers are working on improving the robot’s durability in harsh environments, optimizing energy consumption, and developing new control interfaces, such as voice commands and eye tracking, to make teleoperation even more efficient.
With these advances, HyQReal is positioned as a key ally in rescue robotics , expanding human capabilities in high-risk situations and offering a robust solution for remote disaster assistance.
