A Chinese research team has unveiled the launch of Black Panther 2.0 , a quadruped robot dog that has managed to cover 100 meters in less than 10 seconds. This achievement places the robot in the category of machines that reach speeds comparable to those of the fastest athletes in the world.

It was developed by a joint team from Zhejiang University and Hangzhou-based Mirror Me , creating a robot weighing 38 kg and 0.63 metres in height. Among its most notable features is its ability to reach a maximum stride frequency of 5 times per second. The design of the Black Panther 2.0 has been inspired by the movements of animals such as black panthers and gerbils, which has allowed it to optimise its speed and precision.

The research team, led by Professor Wang Hongtao, integrated elements that allow the robot to move with impressive fluidity. By integrating springs into the knee joints, which serve as shock absorbers, and using carbon fiber shins inspired by the desert gerbil, they were able to improve resistance to high speeds, and increase limb stiffness by up to 135%.

Through AI machine learning , the robot dog can adjust its gait efficiently, enabling continuous advancement to improve quadruped robots and bring them ever closer to the fluid movements of animals.

The Black Panther 2.0 robot has surpassed many humans in the definition of speed, but it is still a long way from matching the fastest animals on the planet, such as cheetahs or ostriches. Nevertheless, the research team hopes to close the gap between robots and living beings, which could result in new forms of mobility for humanity.
