Pembroke Power Station, one of Europe’s largest gas-fired facilities, capable of supplying electricity to nearly four million homes, is implementing an innovative strategy to combat climate change.

RWE, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of electricity and gas, has initiated a project to capture the carbon dioxide emitted by this plant.

In a collaborative effort with Dragon LNG, RWE plans to install subsea pipelines at the Pembroke power station to transport captured CO₂ to a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal located in the Milford Haven estuary. This project not only seeks to preserve jobs and launch a new CO₂ transportation industry, but also to decrease emissions from the gas plant, involving significant construction work in a protected marine habitat.

Located in Pembrokeshire, Wales, this project will connect thePembroke power station with the LNG terminal, with the aim of being operational before the end of this decade. Engineering studies are already underway, with partial funding from the UK government. RWE aims to capture up to two megatonnes of emissions by 2030, with plans to increase to five megatonnes by 2035.

This effort is part of the South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC) effort to reduce carbon emissions. carbon emissions from major industries, with Pembroke Power Station emissions from major industries, with Pembroke power station being one of the largest carbon emitters in Wales.
