South Korea’s POSCO Holdings and the Indian steelmaker JSW Steel signed a preliminary agreement to evaluate the construction of a steel plant, specialized in steel, with a capacity of 6 million tons per year in India. The initiative aims to consolidate a strategic alliance between two global steel giants.
The project and construction of a mega steel plant in India
The agreement was signed in Mumbai in August 2025, laying the groundwork for a 50:50 joint venture, aligned with Atmanirbhar Bharat’s vision for the Indian government. The plant would aim to cater to both the domestic market and export destinations, helping to strengthen India’s position as a manufacturing hub.
Both companies will conduct a detailed feasibility study to define critical aspects such as location, required investments and availability of resources. The state of Odisha, due to its mineral wealth and logistical advantages, is emerging as one of the most encouraging sites to host the project.

Representatives of both companies mentioned that the project reflects a shared long-term vision, based on mutual trust and the ambition to generate value for both economies. The agreement is framed in a context of increasing global steel demand, especially in Asia.
