Israel has taken necessary measures for the prevention of sewage pollution, created guidelines for the International Maritime Organization(IMO) ANNEX IV regulations under MARPOL.

Harpaz P&I has provided a detailed update on these new regulations. Although most vessels operating in international maritime trade comply with Annex IV, it is anticipated that the implementation of these rules in Israel will not affect vessels arriving at Israeli ports.

These measures will come into effect at the end of June 2024, and one of the most relevant changes is the obligation of all Israeli ports and terminals to provide onshore reception facilities, for sewage on request by ships. This provision requires ships to give 24 hours’ notice prior to their arrival at any Israeli port, thus ensuring adequate preparation of these facilities.

In addition to the requirements established in Annex IV, the new regulations proposed by the Israeli country include a ban on the discharge of treated wastewater into the sea within port boundaries. This restriction is aimed at further reducing the negative environmental impact and protecting Israeli territorial waters from any pollution from ships.
