PETRONAS secures long-term LNG supply with QatarEnergy

The agreement fixes stable volumes of liquefied natural gas for two decades and strengthens Malaysia's energy security.

First, PETRONAS took a relevant step by formalizing a 20-year LNG supply agreement with QatarEnergy, through its subsidiary PETRONAS LNG Ltd. The contract provides for the purchase and sale of up to two million tons of LNG per year, creating a stable flow that supports long-term energy planning.

A contract that expands LNG supply

The agreement then becomes the first long-term LNG supply contract between the two companies, consolidating a business relationship that until now had been developed through other forms of cooperation within the global gas market.

The volumes committed will further strengthen the availability of liquefied natural gas for Malaysia, a key factor in a context of growing demand and the need to diversify sources of supply. This stable supply reduces exposure to spot market volatility and improves the predictability of the energy system.

Similarly, the contract complements the cargoes PETRONAS obtains from its main LNG production hubs in Malaysia and Canada, expanding the network of supply nodes and strengthening operational resilience.

The contract was formalized in Doha during the LNG2026 International Conference and Exhibition. The event was attended by the chairman and CEO of PETRONAS Group, Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, and Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and chairman and CEO of QatarEnergy.

This international framework underlines the relevance of the agreement within the liquefied natural gas industry and places it as a reference in the long-term supply contracts that are defining the balance of the energy market.

The alliance with QatarEnergy also enables PETRONAS to diversify its liquefied natural gas supply portfolio and optimize long-term volume management. The strategy aims to improve logistics efficiency and capture value in a global energy environment marked by structural changes.

From this perspective, the agreement also strengthens QatarEnergy’s position as a key supplier within the international LNG trade, consolidating its role in long-term contracts with strategic buyers.

Finally, the collaboration reflects a shared focus on a future-ready gas portfolio. Both companies stress the importance of deepening cooperation along the LNG value chain, integrating economic development and energy transition objectives.
