Due to a severe drought, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has chosen to limit daily traffic through the waterway to only 32 vessels , according to an official statement issued. This measure was recently implemented and came into effect on July 30. It has been pointed out that the number of boats allowed could be adjusted according to the water level in Gatun Lake, weather forecasts and other relevant factors.
New measure in the Panama Canal
This measure has been implemented with the purpose of ensuring the safe and effective operation of the channel.
“It is important to note that reducing the number of daily transits for an extended period will invariably increase waiting time for some vessels , particularly those that do not obtain a reservation,” the Authority said. In this context, he recommended making a reservation for transit through the special system.
On previous occasions, restrictions on the maximum draft allowed for larger ships that transit the route had been applied due to the decrease in the level of the artificial lakes that supply the route.
In addition, in response to the worrying situation of drought, the ACP has taken various measures to save water and has declared a state of environmental emergency throughout the territory of Panama. It is warned that the drought could worsen with the arrival of the El Niño phenomenon and the early start of the dry season in 2024.
