At the 1st Brazilian Workshop on Geothermal Energy Utilization and Storage, Global OTEC unveiled the OTEC Power Module, a key innovation for sustainable ocean energy . The event, held at the Cenpes Convention Center and organized by Petrobras, witnessed how this technology promises to transform offshore operations.
Offshore energy efficiency with the OTEC Power Module
The OTEC Power Module , based on ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC), offers a modular, emissions-free power solution for remote platforms and wells. By dispensing with long subsea cables, the system is able to provide baseload power without the need for hydraulic connections, overcoming typical distance limits of 35 km.
Designed using the organic Rankine cycle, the module generates continuous, clean electricity by using the temperature gradient between warm surface water and cold deep water. “ This breakthrough not only reduces the cost of subsea connections by 20-30%, but also minimises CO2 and methane emissions ,” said Yann Helle, CEO of 2H, a partner in the development.
Each module has a capacity of up to 500 kW and is suitable for integration into existing marine systems , making it ideal for unmanned operations. Dan Grech, CEO of Global OTEC, said: “ With our expansion to Houston, we will collaborate with offshore leaders to drive energy efficiency and replace gas turbines on floating platforms .”
