The Oskarshamn nuclear power plant, located on the east coast of Sweden and operated by OKG AB(Oskarshamns Kraftgrupp), has confirmed that the Oskarshamn 3 unit will resume operations on October 31. This delay is due to final verification and restoration activities following the rectification of damaged pipe segments.
Restarting the Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant
According to Andreas Roos, OKG’s Production Manager, the equipment is in the final stage of an intervention that required the development of a new repair method together with the technical supplier. The complexity of the working environment and the and strict nuclear safety requirements determined every step of the determined every step of the process.
To address the failure, an approach based on specialized robots was used to intervene in difficult-to-access areas without compromising the safety of personnel. The stages included cutting the damaged segment, subsequent welding with a new section and a rigorous battery of quality tests, including internal checks of the welded surface.
The implementation of specialized techniques made it possible to discard solutions that did not meet the expected standards. The restoration of the auxiliary equipment and the execution of final tests will mark the end of the process.
The Oskarshamn 3 unit is one of the world’s largest boiling water reactors, with a maximum capacity of 1450 MW. In 2024, it produced 10.8 TWh of clean electricity, representing 7% of the national total. The restart of its operation ensures a steady contribution to the Swedish electricity system, while enhancing OKG’s commitment to sustainable power generation.
The new date set for resumption is October 31. Until then,
