Ørsted has completed its energy transformation by reducing its carbon emissions by 98% from 2006 levels, making it the first company in its sector to achieve a complete transition to renewable energy.
Offshore wind energy achieves carbon emission reductions
This process began in 2009 with a clear vision: to abandon polluting fuels and opt for a sustainable energy model. Today, Ørsted produces 99% of its energy from renewable sources. renewable sourceswith a strong presence in offshore wind farms.
According to Ingrid Reumert, Senior Vice President of Global Stakeholder Relations, reducing emissions is “a scientific and moral responsibility. She added that they will continue to work with their partners to achieve net zero emissions throughout their value chain by 2040.
The company was a pioneer in adopting climate targets approved by the Science Based Targets(SBTi) initiative. A strategy that included measures such as the total closure of coal-fired plants, the electrification of its vehicle fleet and the exclusive use of certified renewable electricity.
Now, with its direct and indirect emissions (scopes 1 and 2) reduced to just 4 g CO2e/kWh, the company maintains its pace towards decarbonizing its supply chain by addressing intensive materials such as steel and marine fuels.
COP30, held in Brazil, has put the spotlight on electrification and the role of industry in meeting the Paris Agreement commitments. Reumert called on governments to provide “predictable frameworks” to enable companies to invest in clean technologies on a large scale.
