OMV has confirmed the start of the development of a green hydrogen electrolysis plant. green hydrogen in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria, with a capacity of 140 megawatts. The aim is to begin operations by the end of 2027, making it one of the largest facilities of its kind on the continent.

The plant is designed to generate up to 23,000 tons per year of hydrogen using only renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydroelectric.

New green hydrogen plant production details

The hydrogen produced will directly supply the OMV refinery in Schwechat OMV’s refinery in Schwechat, by means of a through a pipeline 22-kilometer gas pipeline. This connection will reduce up to 150,000 tons of carbon emissions each year, representing about 10% of the facility’s current direct emissions.

This project is part of OMV’s corporate strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Participation of partners in engineering and execution

The plant will be developed under an EPC contract by a consortium led by Siemens Energy which will supply and implement the electrolysis, compression and transformation systems.

STRABAG will be responsible for all civil infrastructure, including the construction of buildings and auxiliary facilities.

The project has also received positive evaluation from the European Hydrogen Bank and is supported by Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH. The financing agreement is expected to be signed in the coming weeks, which will allow the installation and testing to proceed before the planned start-up.
